Mindful Life Student Interview: Meet Samantha Ashleigh!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I live in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida, where I’m the Associate Director of Financial Aid Services at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. While I work in the financial aid world by day, I’m also passionate about yoga, free-diving, and any water-related activity –especially paddle boarding and kayaking. My love of nature is a big part of who I am.
I also have a handsome 18-year-old son, Gavin, and a sweet, feisty cat named Dutchess. When I’m not in the water or practicing yoga, I love dancing, and I recently started learning lyra aerial hoop. Creative movement has become an important part of my mental health journey, as it helps me to feel both balanced and connected.
How long have you been practicing yoga? What drew you to yoga, and how has it enriched your life?
My yoga journey began when I took my first class at age 16 (although I didn’t start practicing regularly until later in life). Although I was initially drawn to yoga as a way to explore movement, it has evolved into serving a much deeper purpose in my life. Yoga helped me heal after several major life changes, including leaving a toxic relationship and working through challenges that I was still processing from my divorce.
Sobriety brought a newfound clarity to my practice, as it has allowed me to grow both physically and spiritually. I’ve become stronger, I am more connected to my inner self, and I have found peace and a sense of purpose through teaching and sharing yoga with others.
How did you meet Alexandra McRobert? What experiences have you had with the Mindful Life Practice?
I first connected with Alex McRobert during the pandemic when I stumbled upon her podcast, Sober Yoga Girl. I related deeply to her journey and her words, which were instrumental in helping me to make the decision to quit alcohol. I went on to complete her Sober-Curious Yoga Teacher Training Program with The Mindful Life Practice, and Alex became both a mentor and a friend.
Alex and I eventually met in person when I signed up for her manifestation retreat, which took place in Baja, Mexico at the Yandara Yoga Institute. The retreat was an unforgettable experience. I was so inspired by the work and connection that I felt in Alex’s programs, that I even co-hosted my first yoga and Pilates retreat in June 2024. Alex has been a true inspiration on my journey toward a healthier and more balanced life.
How has your decision to become alcohol free changed your life?
Choosing to live alcohol free has been transformational. I knew that giving up alcohol would bring about positive changes, but I couldn’t have imagined just how life-changing it would be! My physical, mental, and spiritual health has improved in ways that I never anticipated. My yoga practice has deepened, I’m in the best shape of my life, and I wake up every day feeling energized instead of sluggish. I’ve gained clarity in my relationships, found supportive and inspiring friends, and developed a healthier lifestyle overall. Becoming alcohol free has allowed me to truly connect with myself and the world around me.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is sober-curious or new to sobriety?
For those who are sober-curious, I’d say to listen to that inner voice. Society often promotes alcohol as a way to have fun, but real joy and connection don’t come from a bottle. Embracing sobriety brings clarity, peace, and balance. Take things one day at a time and surround yourself with a supportive community; it makes all the difference.
During this initial period of being alcohol free, I also challenge you to try something new or revisit an old hobby with which you have lost touch. Reflect on the things that brought you joy as a child, and explore ways to weave those passions into your adult life. Embracing your childhood interests can bring a renewed sense of happiness, creativity, and fulfillment.
What would you say to someone who is contemplating going on his/her first yoga retreat?
If you’re considering your first yoga retreat, go for it! A retreat is a unique opportunity to step out of your daily routine, immerse yourself in new practices, and make meaningful connections. It’s a chance to focus solely on yourself, explore new perspectives, and return home refreshed and reconnected!
